My baby sister is the biggest annoyance in my life. She's four years younger than me, and I can not think of anyone else who can grind my gears as badly as she does. She steals my clothes, eats my food, tattles on me, and always manages to use all the cellphone data usage. She's absurdly stubborn, and won't take any of my advice. I always have to drive her around, and she coincidentally never has any money when we reach the end of the Dunkin' Donuts Drive-Thru. She's fifteen going on twenty-five, and she's under the impression that she has all the knowledge in the world. Michaela is her name, but Layla is what she goes by. She's a hotheaded sophomore in high school with a strong sense of independence and a bit too much attitude. Layla is the epitome of beauty; with perpetually bronzed skin, dark brown almond shaped eyes, and long wavy hair. If I didn't know her, I would be jealous of her. She is my sister, and she is the biggest influence on my life.
Throughout my life, I have had many role models. As a young child, it was Disney princesses and actresses such as the Olson twins. As I got older, my role models became my parents, select teachers, and even some of my peers. Needless to say, my role models changed over time. But there was one thing that always remained as a constant, and that was the fact that I always wanted to be my sister's role model. I made a decision at a young age to make sure that I would never let my sister down.
Michaela is the most independent person I know. I remember her sitting in her highchair and refusing our mom's attempts to feed her with a spoon. The only way we could get her to eat was when we would let her hold the spoon herself. It was the funniest thing watching her try to maneuver silverware on her own. Even though only a fraction of the food actually made it to her mouth, she was still satisfied with herself. Her sense of determination in school, and outside of school is impressive. She's the kind of person who has goals, and who achieves them. It's not just Michaela's success that makes her so great though, it's the fact that she can send this positive energy to others. When I'm having a bad day, or when I just can't find the energy to carry on with my homework, she's the one that's by my side. She's the sister that sits with me at the kitchen table during finals week until three in the morning, just making sure that I don't give up on my studying.
Having four years between my sister and I can cause a lot of problems. A lot of the time I feel as though she doesn't understand what I'm going through. With me in college and her still in high school we've lost a bit of our communication. Even though were miles away from each other It's still her voice in my head that tells to take that extra five minutes studying. She's always been my biggest supporter, and I can honestly say she has had the biggest influence on my academic career. Between me not wanting to let my sister down, and her constant reminders to do great things and to always push to be better, I have become a better person.
My younger sister entered my life when I was four years old.She was born on December 18, 1998; seven days before Christmas. I waited patiently for nine months to meet her, and I promised my mom's stomach that I was going to be the best big sister to ever live. I planned in advance what games I would teach her how to play, and what books I would have our mom read to us. When she finally arrived however, she first arrived without a heartbeat. Being only four years old, I wasn't allowed to be in the heart of the hospital room where my mom was being held. I was to stay with my grandparents in the waiting room. After a long time, my dad came out to the waiting room and informed us that my baby sister was sick. She was born without a heartbeat due to an underlying heart murmur. She was placed in the infant intensive care unit, and she was hooked up to tubes that would help her breathe.
My baby sister is the biggest influence on my life. It's funny because all I ever wanted was to be the best role model for her. Little does she know that she is my number role model, and I'm her number one fan. She is the one the pushes me to be better. Some people question Michaela's determination. But if they knew her story it would all make sense. I have yet to seriously give up on anything in my life. But I'm human so there are obviously times where the only thing I want to do is to give up and call it quits. Having Michaela as my sister changes my mind though, because all I have to do is think of the image of my one day old sister, going from not breathing on her own, to crying and pulling out her breathing tube on her own. I've never given up, because she never did.
